24. Are We in Denial About Aging?

Midlife has been rebranded as a sexy, powerful time—but are we feeling it? An honest chat with The Broad Life founders Janna King and Gina Kohler about why 50 should not be considered the new 30.

Welcome to the new midlife. Haven’t you heard? 50 is the new 30. This is now the “it” stage of life where we’re supposed to feel sexier and more powerful than ever before. And apparently no longer give a damn about what anyone thinks.

But, wait.

What if we don’t feel all that hot and empowered, and we still give a damn?

On this episode of the More Beautiful Podcast, I have a let’s-get-real conversation with Janna King and Gina Kohler, founders of the Broad Life website for the over-40 set. We chat about how this is both the best time of our lives, and one of the most challenging. We admit to some stuff, like the vanity and confusion we sometimes feel about the physical changes we’re experiencing. And we talk about how midlife’s glamorous makeover sometimes feels like too much pressure.

We also explain why these days, we actually care more, but give less of a you-know-what—and what the difference is. And we share how on our best days, we feel incredibly powerful and…dare we say, even sexy.

Janna King (right) is a writer-director in a variety of mediums. As a twice-married mother of two twenty-somethings, she has racked up a lot of miles under her tires, harnessing some bumpy life experiences (and often a dry sense of humor) to create material. She has written TV movies for Lifetime and Hallmark, along with produced episodes for several drama series. Her New Adult/YA novels The Seasonaires and Malibu Bluff were optioned by Blumhouse TV, and she has developed original and book-based film and TV properties for a host of studios, producers and talent. In addition, she has directed plays, music videos and award-winning short films. She delved into children’s animation when her kids were young, writing for Disney Junior, WB and Sony, to name a few, and now mentors young writers through the non-profit 826LA and at UCLA Extension. After living most of her life in Los Angeles, Janna now splits her time between the West Coast and the Pacific Northwest with her spouse and two dogs.

Gina Kohler (left) has more than three decades of experience as a leader in the consumer products arena, successfully launching an impressive array of beauty, personal care and women’s lifestyle brands. Immersing herself in product development, she is an expert in marketing and branding for subscription-based and DTC companies. She also believes in the value of giving back, and volunteers for a variety of causes. Gina lives in Los Angeles with her husband, two sons, and the only other female in the house, Bailey, their loving chocolate lab.

Janna and Gina are co-founders of The Broad Life, a website for people over 40.
